SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT

Email applications. I have always disliked them, but I recently joined a game that switched from comment-based apps to an email-based system just before the first app period opened, and I can say with complete certainty that it was a terrible, terrible move, and I am still angry about some of what happened as a result, not to mention my enthusiasm was significantly punctured.
Comment applications allow not only for transparency in moderating, but for enthusiasm. As a player, I love the opportunity to see the apps as they come in. It lets me get excited about and feel engaged in the app process. I can see which reserves followed through, read their apps, and hover eagerly waiting the close of apps so that they can be reviewed and I can welcome the new player. I even get the opportunity to speak to a mod if I feel something is significantly wrong with an app. If a player's app has been missed, it's easy to see, instead of that player having to wonder what happened.
With email apps I only have questions. Did that reserve app yet? When will their app be reviewed? Are they being reviewed in any particular order? Are they any good? What's going on while I'm sitting here blind? It deprives me of that enthusiasm. And that's 100% assuming that you guys are awesome and nothing will go wrong, the way it all went wrong at my other game.
I'm really not certain what the advantages of an email application system are. I've heard privacy and organization raised as concerns, but I've also heard people disclaim both of those concerns: someone claimed that having comment apps actually helped her in an instance where she was accused of plagiarism, because it was obvious to everyone that her app predated the other.
If privacy is a concern, consider breaking the app into two comments, the first one for OOC information and basic IC information like character name and canon, and the second for the actual personality section and samples etc, and then screen the second after you're finished. If organization is a concern, you could use that penultimately useful tool: Notepad. The game I moderate has 200 characters, and I use Notepad to organize my thoughts on and links to each app, and it's very easy. I've honestly never had any sort of problem with or objection to our comment-based app system, and in fact it's quite gratifying to see our players getting excited over each app that comes in, psyching themselves up more and more.
I realize this is a ridiculously long and obnoxious comment from a stranger asking you to change a system you've not only intended for your game, but planned in ICly. I apologize for that. But I really feel that the email app system is not only not a superior app system, but actively deprives players of something they enjoy, something that builds up enthusiasm for your game. So I felt obligated to at least say something to you instead of silently thinking that this is something I feel could really improve the game that I'm starting to get excited about.
On an unrelated note, I'm disappointed that this post doesn't allow for anonymous comments. Why can't people make anonymous suggestions to improve the game? I really wanted to be able to start this game with a clean slate, instead of feeling like the mods must be going, "Oh, it's that crazy girl who wants comment apps. Great." This is really, really discouraging.

Ohe topic of apps, the concerns of not knowing if an app has been received or if they're being reviewed or in what order is covered with the app status page. As soon as we receive an app we will be updating that page so everyone knows that we've got it. Same with each step up to acceptance! So you'll know when your app is being reviewed or if the app you're stalking has a revision or what have you.
For now we're going to stick with email apps. It makes it easier for us to get access to the apps and review them and process them, so we can flag them when one mod has read it and keep things well organized. Also so I can check them and read them when I am away from my home computer. Which is quite often, as I do a lot of reviewing apps on my phone while I'm running around, RL limits my time at home. However, if the player base would prefer comment style applications we'll definitely be open to switching! I'll be putting out a poll after our first app rotation for critique and suggestions for changes on our app process. If we do end up switching I'll have to tweak the IC effects a little, but we can deal with that if or when it happens.
Thank you again for taking your time out to write this. I really do appreciate any and every suggestion on how to improve. I'll get on that anon issue right away, and if you have any other questions or concerns dont hesitate to bring them up. I hope you do decide to play here!
